Plum & Pear Crumble Recipe

I had some fruit I needed to use up as it was getting a bit past its prime.  I had a bunch of plums, some pears, and a nectarine.  I thought it would be fun to make a crumble and found this recipe that sounded perfect.  I love a good crumble any time of year but they are just especially tasty during the Autumn.

You will need Pears, Plums, a Nectarine, Walnuts, Baking Powder, Oats, Flour Brown Sugar, Butter, Vanilla, Cinnamon, a bit of water, and Nutmeg.

Toss the water, Vanilla, Cinnamon, and Brown Sugar into a saucepan.  Stir until the Sugar dissolves and then bring it to a boil.

Simmer 6-8 minutes until the mixture reduces a bit and becomes syrupy.
Chop up your yummy fruits. You can leave the skin on the fruit or not.

Toss the fruit into the pan with the yummy syrup on the bottom.

add in some Cinnamon and Nutmeg.  Mix everything together really well and let it cook 3-4 minutes or until everything starts to soften.
Meanwhile in a bowl add the Flour and butter.

Mix it with a fork until it started to get crumbly.

Add in the Oats.
Once it's all mixed together it will look a bit like bread crumbs.

Now add in some Brown Sugar, Baking Soda, And Cinnamon.

You will want to remove most of the syrup from the fruit.  You can save it for later to drizzle over the top if you like.
Place the just tender fruit into the bottom of a pie pan.

Top with the crumble mixture and bake 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until it is golden.  I probably should have left mine in a bit longer..but you live and learn.

Yummy!  Look at the bubbly syrupy fruit coming out.  Oh yeah!

Eat it while it's good and warm.  Top with a little ice cream and drizzle on a bit of syrup if you are so inclined.  Enjoy!

Plum & Pear Crumble Recipe
Source:  Not Quite Nigella

Fruit:

1 C Water
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
2/3 C Lightly packed Brown Sugar
1 Lb Plums
3 Ripe Pears, cored and cut into pieces
(I added 1 Nectarine but it isn't necessary I just had it on hand and thought it would be nice.

Crumble:

3 TBSP softened Butter
2/3 C Flour
1/2 C Brown Sugar lightly packed
1/2 C Oats
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Baking Powder

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the Water, Vanilla, Brown Sugar, and Cinnamon in a heavy saucepan over medium heat.  Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture begins to boil.  Allow the pot to simmer about 6-8 minutes while the mixture reduces down and becomes a bit syrupy.  Add the fruit and simmer 3-4 minutes until they just begin to soften

Meanwhile in a medium bowl combine the Butter and Flour with a fork.  Add in the oats and combine well.  It will look a bit like coarse bread crumbs when combined.  Add the Brown Sugar, Baking Powder, and Cinnamon.

When the fruit is done cooking you will want to drain off most of the syrup.  Leave some in as you will want it in the cooking process but you don't want it soupy.  You can reserve the liquid for drizzling over your crumble when it is done if you like.  Place the fruit in the bottom of a pie pan and top with the Crumble mixture and bake 25-30 minutes until it is brown and bubbly.

Top with ice cream and a drizzle of the syrup if you like.

Enjoy!
